This course aims to explore how sciences from the ancient school of Alexandria travelled to the Islamic world and how the Arabs managed to attain the sciences of Alexandria and the translation movement. The course will also explore Arab knowledge of Alexandrian mosques; the Muslim knowledge of Alexandrian philosophy; the conditions that led to the rise of science and philosophy both in the Islamic world and in Alexandria; compare Islamic and Hellenistic thought; and analysing Hellenistic philosophy.
