Baroque describes the European art forms from the 17thand early 18th century that were remarkable for their elaborate ornamentation. The baroque was the predominant musical style between 1600 and 1750. it was remarkable for its overly ornamented and exaggerated melodies. In these 150 years an enormous number of musical forms and genres came into being such as the opera, which has become an integral part of contemporary western music.
Two genres which originated during the 17th century were typical for this development—the concerto and the sonata. In fact, they are the focal point of the Leipzig Baroque Soloists’ concert program.
