The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is hosting "The Mediterranean: State of the Art and Future Issues International Symposium on ", 2-4 October 2004. The symposium is held in cooperation with CNRS (France), the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the French Institute of Archeology and the Institute of Research and Development.

The theme of Mediterranean population, from its origins to the birth of the first states, seems to be of a great interest. Large-scale work has been conducted on the northern part of this geographical area and they use often too sparse data from the near and Middle-East. Thanks to the CNRS (France) and the Midi-Pyrenees region, large-scale collaborative initiatives have been launched with Egypt where research have already made great breakthrough and with some Maghreb countries in order to better understand the biological factor in this part of the world. In parallel with these studies, the standard archaeological and anthropological studies have largely developed in the last twenty years in the Mediterranean area.

CONFERENCE THEMES:

  • Present genetic diversity in the Mediterranean Basin
  • Human selection and evolution in the Mediterranean Basin, biological and cultural factors
  • Ancient populations of the Mediterranean Basin, from the lower Palaeolithic age to the creation of the first states (Egypt), biological and cultural data
