Environmentally Sustainable Urbanization

Under the auspices of The Alexandria Governorate, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Program UN-HABITAT are organizing the Global Meeting of the Sustainable Cities Program (SCP) and Localizing Agenda 21 Program (LA21) for the year 2003 which will take place in Alexandria. This meeting dubbed “Alex 2003” will take place at the prestigious “Bibliotheca Alexandrina”. Over 100 UNEP and UN-HABITAT partners working in sustainable urbanization initiatives mainly through the Sustainable Cities Program (UNEP/HABITAT) and the Localizing Agenda 21(UN-HABITAT) Program are expected to participate in the four days meeting.

 The main purpose of the meeting is to develop a Capacity Building Agenda for improved implementation of local Environmental planning and Management (EPM) strategies through regional and national institutions for poverty reduction and improved urban governance within the framework of the international Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially MDG 7 on environmental sustainability, which targets significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers.

The conference will provide a platform for exchange of knowledge, expertise and experiences in EPM implementation, particularly in Basic Urban Services (BUS) and Sustainable Urban Mobility (SUM).
