The meeting is organized within the framework of ACI TTT 2004 “Cultures of Water in the Oriental Mediterranean”, in collaboration with the French Ministry of foreign affairs, the CNRS (French National Center of Scientific Research), the Center of Alexandrian studies (which is part of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina), the French University Lumière-Lyon 2, and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
This first international colloquium, "Balnéorient", will take place from 1 to 4 December 2006 in Alexandria. It will tackle, in a diachronic way, the question of public baths in Egypt, from ancient installations to the present “hammam”. although not restricted to Alexandria, the colloquium will emphasize the Alexandrian Chôra.
This meeting is an introduction to a project of a collective research on public baths in the Oriental Mediterranean. It will work towards the establishment of an index and a corpus of Egyptian buildings (ancient and modern).
