Depictions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Early Byzantine Art

The BA Coptic Studies Center is organizing a lecture titled “Depictions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Early Byzantine Art” at the National Museum in Alexandria on Sunday, 22 February 2015 at 12:00 noon.
The lecture will discuss the various depictions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at different art centers, focusing on the early period of Christian history, which is considered to be the most important period and the founding basis for art later on.
The artistic depictions of the Blessed Virgin Mary varied according to different Christian doctrines. For example, the West portrayed her as the mother of Christ and the “Crowned Virgin”, depicted as an empress sitting on a throne while holding her child, Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, the Christian Orthodox depicted her as the Mother of God. The lecture will discuss these different representations in more detail.
The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Doaa Bahey el-Din, Supervisor of the BA Coptic Studies Center’s activities and Lecturer at the Alexandria University.
