The BA Hosts the Inaugural Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership

The BA hosts on 26 November 2007, an international ceremony organized by Mo Ibrahim Foundation to honor Joaquim Chissano, former President of Mozambique as the winner of the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership. The annual Prize has been established by the renowned Sudanese businessman Mohamed Fathi Ibrahim, and launched in October 2006 as an African initiative to strengthen governance, democracy, and development in Africa.
The honorary ceremony will be attended by political leaderships, academia, media men, and civil society representatives, in addition to distinguished international leaderships including Kofi Anan, former Secretary General of the United Nations, and Chair of the Prize Committee; and South African Leader Nelson Mandela, who is the ceremony's guest of honor.
In a press conference held in London on 22 October 2007, KofI Anan announced the former President of Mozambique as the winner of the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership. Anan said “President Chissano’s achievements in bringing peace, reconciliation, stable democracy and economic progress to his country greatly impressed the committee. So, too, did his decision to step down without seeking the third term the constitution allowed.” Anan added that leading Mozambique from conflict to peace and democracy was President Chissano most outstanding contribution.
The Mo Ibrahim Prize consists of US$ 5 million over 10 years and US$ 200,000 annually for life thereafter.
