Alexandria— The United Nations in Egypt and the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood will be launching their annual campaign for the third year "Sailing the Nile for the Millennium Development Goals 2008" on Saturday, 18 October 2008 at the BA at 12:00 noon.

The launch of the campaign will be attended by the General Adel Labib, Governor of Alexandria, representatives from the campaign partners, local and international Non Governmental Organizations, donor organizations, civil society, celebrities and the media.

The 2008 edition of Sailing the Nile has two main objectives: to raise awareness on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) eight years after the Millennium Declaration; and to enhance civil society participation in efforts to achieve the MDGs through volunteerism.

Egypt has committed to the measurable and time-bound Millennium Development Goals adopted by 147 world leaders in September 2000. The eight goals aim at a minimum level of development by 2015 in the areas of poverty and hunger, health, gender equality, basic education, and environment sustainability. This year’s efforts will also be linked to and built on national initiatives that relate to the MDGs, namely the Egyptian Government’s Sixth Five-Year Plan for 2007-2011.

Since 2006, this initiative has built on a unique partnership that brings together “One UN”, the Egyptian Government, the private sector, media and academia to help raise awareness on the MDGs and contribute to the achievement of the MDGs through volunteer efforts. The campaign partners this year include; the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM), The Youth Association for Population and Development (YAPD), Mansour Group, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Plan International, Japan International Cooperation Agency, (JICA), the National Committee on Viral Hepatitis, FedEx, and Kwik Kopy.

The 2008 Millennium Development Goals Caravan will combine three different means of transport (feluccas, buses and a train). The campaign will start on 18 October – 13 December, conducting press conferences and activities in eight different governorates across Egypt (Alexandria, Aswan, Qena, Sohag, Assyut, Menia, Beni Suef and Cairo in addition to the city of Luxor) that will serve as the backbone of the campaign.
