The Official Inauguration of the Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies

Alexandria— The Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies, a joint collaboration between the BA, the Onassis Foundation, the Vardinoyannis Foundation and the University of Alexandria, is set to be inaugurated under the auspices of Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, Egypt’s First Lady,on Tuesday, 27 November 2008 in a ceremony at the BA. The inauguration will include the “Approaching Heaven” exhibition, featuring Icons of the Velimezis Collection from the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation and the Benaki Museum and which is held under the auspices of H.E. Dr. Karolos Papoulias, President of the Hellenic Republic, and will be inaugurated by Mr. Theodoros Kassimis, Hellenic Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The inauguration ceremony will be preceded by a press conference and will also include addresses by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the BA; His Beatitude Theodoros II Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa; Mr. Anthony Papadimitriou, President of the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit; Mrs. Marianna Vardinoyannis, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador/ Vardinoyannis Foundation; Dr. Okasha Abdel Aal representative of Dr. Hassan Nadir, President of Alexandria University; and Mr. Kassimis. The program will be concluded with a lecture delivered by Professor Nano Chatzidakis, Scientific Curator of the Velimezis Icons Collection.

The Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies, is established as a joint collaboration between the BA, the Onassis Foundation, the Vardinoyannis Foundation and the University of Alexandria. The Center is open to scholars from around the world who are keen to obtain diplomas, Masters and Doctorates in Hellenistic studies, in particular in the fields of: History; Literature; Art, Archeology and Architecture; and Philosophy and Science. Professors from the Alexandria University, Cairo University and European Universities will teach in the center. The lectures will be given in English to university graduates from all majors, where non-specialist students will study for two years to get a diploma that qualifies them to obtain a master's and doctorate. The Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies inaugural ceremony will start at 19 hrs, at BA Conference Center, Small Theater. The Exhibition will be held in the East Exhibition Hall, BA Conference Center, from 27 November to 20 December 2008.
