“Arab Women Facing the Challenges of Globalization” Conference at the BA

Alexandria— The BA, in cooperation with Claremont and Yale Universities, will organize a conference entitled “Arab Women Facing the Challenges of Globalization”, during the period from 13 to 15 January 2008.

The Conference will be attended by more than 150 participants and will address several challenges that face women in the global world. It will discuss the economic impact of violence against women, as well as women’s economic empowerment, and the impact of changing world economies on family structures. It will also review successful case studies of women’s empowerment through alternative means of generating income. Closing the male/female gap in Literacy in the context of educational reform will also be discussed especially in relation to the effect of literacy on women’s employment opportunities. The conference will address the issue of trafficking in women which has been referred to as ‘modern-day slavery’.

The Conference will devote a plenary session to each topic lead by a panel of scholars and practitioners, followed by discussions among the panelists.

During the Conference, the BA will launch the Global Women’s Research Institute, which aims to build bridges between policy makers on one side and women activists and NGOs on the other to reach better understanding of the problems facing women in different regions of the world.
