The Fatimid Inscriptions and Writings on the Architectural Monuments Book Awarded Best Book in 2008

Alexandria— The Fatimid Inscriptions and Writings on the Architectural Monuments book, by the Egyptian author Farag Hussien Farag Elhussieny, published by the BA last year and introduced by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, was awarded Best Book in the Sixteenth Edition of the Competition, organized by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will hand out the award (about 10,000 US Dollars) to the author of the book, in addition to a memorial shield.

This book complements the BA efforts in studying Arabic calligraphy in Egypt through producing various publications including encyclopedias and studies recording monumental engravings in Egypt. The book is also a part of “The Journey of Writing in Egypt” project that tours the world recording the development in writing and calligraphy, since the origin of writing till the modern technological developments in this field.

The Fatimid Inscriptions and Writings on the Architectural Monuments book explores the origin of Arabic calligraphy and the stages of its development, since calligraphy is considered one main element that contributed substantially to the formation of Islamic Arts. Islam had an essential role in the field of writing, for the Quran constantly refers to writing and the pen.
