Preliminary Meetings for the Italo-Egyptian Cultural Events

Alexandria, September 8, 2003
– Dr. Carla Burri, Italian Commissary General, and Dr. Mohamed Awad, Director
of the Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center, met at the Bibliotheca
Alexandrina to discuss and plan future events within the cultural exchange
program known as “Grandi Eventi Culturali” between Italy and Egypt for
2003-2004.
Schedules have been set and
topics for discussion have been identified promising to be of interest not only
to Italian and Egyptian scholars, but also to the general public.
The topics that have been
identified for discussion are:
- Italo-Egyptian
Relations in the Field of Economy and Political Science from the Beginning of the
Unification of Italy until the Present.
- Italian
Contributions to the Legal Egyptian Codes in the 19th and the
beginning of the 20th centuries.
- Italian
Architects, Engineers, Urbanists and Constructors in Egypt from 1834-1985.
The first of these
seminars is scheduled for October 19, 2003 with the participation of Italian and
Egyptian scholars in the economic and political fields. Among the scholars
participating are Prof. Salvatore Bono, President of Societé Internationale des
Historiens de la Mediterranée – Roma – and Dr. Rifaat El Said, Chief Editor
of the daily AL Ahaly.
The other two seminars are
scheduled for February and October 2004 respectively.
These will also feature
prominent Italian and Egyptian scholars. An exhibition of Italian architectural
plans, drawing and photos will conclude what promises to be a most memorable
cultural experience.
