Alexandria— The BA hosts on Saturday, 19 December 2009, FameLab Competition, organized by the British Council and the Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Program, affiliated to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Hundred participants take part in this competition from Alexandria and neighboring cities.

Engineer Hoda El-Mikaty, Director of the BA Planetarium Science Center (PSC) will be among the jury panel. Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, will chair the panel of the final competition in January 2010.

FameLab started in the United Kingdom Cheltenham Science Festival in 2005. It is currently held in thirteen different countries; Egypt being the only country from Africa and the Middle East.

The idea of the competition is to take science out of the classroom and make it fun, and to encourage young people, with a passion for science and technology , to share their enthusiasm and knowledge with the general public in an interesting and entertaining way. FameLab is introduced to Egypt in support of the governmental efforts to advance science and to build a culture that understands and supports the positive role science plays in the economic and social well-being of a society.

To guarantee a geographical coverage of all governorates of Egypt, three competitions are held in Cairo, Alexandria and Asyut. Winners will participate in the final competition in January 2010, organized by the RDI, as part of the Euro-Mediterranean Innovation Market.
