President of the Republic of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, bestowed upon Professor Mohamed Awad, Director of the Alexandria Mediterranean Center of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Cavalier of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity (Cavalier dell'Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana) on Sunday, 19 June 2011.

On this occasion, the Italian Consulate in Alexandria will organize a ceremony, where Mario Vinci, the Italian Consulate-General in Alexandria, will present the Cavalier of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity, to Dr. Awad in recognition of his efforts in the preservation of Alexandria’s architectural and cultural heritage, as well as his contribution to the studies on Italian cultural heritage in Egypt, especially in the field of engineering and architecture. One of Awad’s most important contributions in this field is his latest book “Italy in Alexandria”, in which he underlined the influence of the Italian culture on the architecture and the local urbanization of Alexandria from the ancient Roman Age to date.

It is worth mentioning that Dr. Mohamed Awad was awarded the Medallion of Honor and honorary title of “Friend” by the League of Hellenic-Egyptian Friendship; a gesture of gratitude for his tireless efforts to strengthen and deepen the centuries-long Greek- Egyptian friendship on 9 October 2010.
