France Names Serageldin Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters

For his role in the field of intercultural dialogue, Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria will be decorated by Frédéric Mitterrand, French Minister of Culture and Communication, with the insignia of Commander of the Order of Arts & Letters on 29 June 2011.

 

The order, created by President De Gaulle, is awarded in recognition of eminent international contributions to the arts and literature, and is not limited to French nationals.

 
Serageldin had previously been decorated as Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2003, and this new decoration comes as a promotion from Officer to Commander, which is the highest rank in the order.
