The Challenge of the Cravat Exhibition

Alexandria, 2 February 2005—The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), in collaboration with the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Croatian Embassy in Cairo, and Academia Cravatica in Zagreb, Croatia, is hosting an exhibition entitled The Challenge of the Cravat from 8 to 22 February 2005.
The exhibition will portray cravats as interpreted by different Croatian and Egyptian artists. The artists used their insight to experiment with various tie shapes, techniques and materials. Their rich artistic views dealt with the cravat from different perspectives.
The exhibition gains its significance from the fact that it stresses on the relation between innovations and the roots of civilizations. This is in addition to how it illustrates Croatian cultural identity.
The cravat is Croatia’s contribution to the world of fashion. The use of the cravat in Croatia dates back to as early as the mid-17th century. During the Thirty Year European War (1618-1648), Croatian soldiers were drawn into battle and sent to fight in various regions of Europe. Then, the traditional Croatian military dress included a picturesque scarf tied around the neck in a manner which is very similar to the style in which the cravat is worn today.
The exhibition comprises a collection of art works such as, Love, by Dorina Vlakančić, as well as CROATA II by Jeronim Tišljar. Other works by Egyptian artists are also displayed such as Elasticity by Ramzy Moustafa.
This exhibition was hosted, in Cairo, by the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum, in Ofouq Hall from 12 to 22 January 2005. It is expected to tour world capitals after its tour in Egypt.
