Libraries for Schools in an Achieving Society: A lecture at Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Alexandria, 14 February 2005—Professor Peter Nenniger, Professor of Education, University of Koblenz-Landau, Germany, will be giving a lecture entitled Libraries for Schools in an Achieving Society, on 15 February 2005, at Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
The lecture sheds light on the role that libraries play in education and how their services can be integrated within the educational system in a way that benefits readers and learners the most. In an achieving society, successful educational systems combine excellent schools with libraries, as we cannot ignore their role in education. As libraries are to an extent double-faced: one face has to be oriented towards the educational system they are adjacent to, and the other face has to be directed towards the autonomous learner who is simultaneously the object and the subject of their activities. The degree in which libraries realize an integration of this double orientation determines ultimately their effectiveness and their importance in education.
In his lecture, Professor Nenniger will discuss the prerequisites and the consequences of integrating schools and libraries, such as What Makes the Quality of an Educational System?, Which Outcomes from the School are Determinants of Success?, What is Independent Learning and how can we Understand its Role in Education?, and Where is the Place of a Library and how Should we Define its Mission?
Peter Nenniger, Full Professor of Education, University of Koblenz-Landau (Campus Landau), Germany, is also on the Board of Directors of the Centre for Educational Research and the Institute for Pedagogics (since 1992) and Visiting Professor of the University of Basel, Switzerland, from 1985-2000.
Nenniger is member of several scientific institutions and academies, as well as author and co-author of numerous articles and chapters in international and national journals, editor of the Journal Empirische Paedagogik, editor of several book series, and guest editor of special issues of national and international journals.
