Naguib Mahfouz

It is with a great sense of loss, we mourn the passing of Naguib Mahfouz.

Naguib Mahfouz was one of the foremost Egyptian novelists, playwrights and screenwriters in modern Arabic literature who won the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature.

His novels gave pleasure to millions around the world and his works will continue to give such pleasure to many generations yet to come. His humanity and love for his country were genuinely Egyptian but he was nearly as much appreciated by all Arabic-speaking world and people of other countries as by his own countrymen. He has made an indelible mark on Arabic literature and for that he will always be remembered.

On behalf of the staff of the Library of Alexandria, I offer our sincere condolences to his family and to the world.

He will truly be missed.
