Youth and Environment Conference 13-15 July 2002

In recognition of the role of the youth in the area of environment improvement and maintenance and raising environmental awareness, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in collaboration with the civic associations from Sweden, Norway and many other countries shall be hosting the “Youth and Environment Conference” which aims at preserving the blue planet with green footprints and delivering a clear message of man making peace with nature. Based on the belief that youth are the future leaders, one hundred distinguished youth in the practical field of environment preservation have been selected to participate in this conference.
In an attempt to develop knowledge through comprehensive, integrated participation of the youth who possess different ideas, experiences, the conference is based on a new approach known as the “World Knowledge Café” where ideas are directly exchanged. The World Café is a creative process that gives the participants the chance to express their own points of view, present their projects and expectations of the environmental challenges that are likely to occur and trying to find solutions in an integrated, comprehensive manner.
The Conference will contribute in making the Siwa Oasis a living example where it shall illustrate a number of successful environmental applications that focus on man""s health, environmental safety, natural organic products and the development of environmental tourism. A number of distinguished individuals shall be selected to visit the Siwa Oasis to get to know and study its projects.
Through collaborative, integrated thinking and effective opinion exchange, the youth shall be able to transmit a clear message to their partners through the Environmental Summit that shall be held from 26 August to 4 September in Johannesburg, South Africa. This message represents their contributions in the area of solving the environmental problems. A number of distinguished youth participants of the Youth and Environment Conference shall be chosen to transmit this message to the Environmental Summit which shall be held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Youth and Employment conference shall be held under the auspices of Dr. Mamdouh Riad, Minister of the Environment, who shall deliver the opening speech in the opening session, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth.
Special efforts are also being exerted by the University of Alexandria as well as the Bibliotheca Alexandrina to prepare and organize for that conference. Dr. Ismail Serageldin; Director General of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, shall illustrate the vision of the Library in the area of supporting and enhancing the youth environmental activities as well as sustainable development.
