A Roundtable Discussion on “Sustainable Security in the Middle East and North Africa” at the BA

Alexandria— The Institute for Peace Studies, affiliated to Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement, hosted at the BA, in collaboration with the Oxford Research Group is holding a roundtable discussion entitled “Regional Consultation on Sustainable Security in the Middle East and North Africa”, 12 to 14 October 2008.

Twenty experts from the region will participate and study the threats to the region in the political, economic, social and environmental areas. The organizers of the round-table will focus on the need to analyze and address the core elements of the problems and not just treat the symptoms, on the basis that sustainable security requires addressing the roots and solving the problems. Participants will also propose solutions where policy makers can draw strategies and plans that support peace and stability.

Ambassador Ali Maher, Director, BA Peace Studies Institute, stated that the idea of sustainable security gives priority to address the root problems and link between all the elements that increase disputes and threats security. He added that this meeting follows similar meetings held in south-west Asia, Europe and Latin America on the basis that experts of each region are better able to explain and clarify their perception of the risks and threats faced by their region and ways to confront them.

A press conference will follow the roundtable discussion to explain the recomendations on Tuesday, 14 October 2008 at 14:30 hrs at the BA.
