A Workshop on Modern Orientations of Tourism at the BA

Alexandria— In cooperation with the Higher Institute of Tourism, Hotels & Computer, the BA Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex-Med) is organizing on Tuesday, 16 December 2008, a workshop under the title “Modern Orientations of Tourism: Cultural Tourism from Monuments to Humans”.

As its name suggests, tourism is a field of exchange where one tours past and present ages through real and time-frozen images. Ever since the 1960s, the face of entertainment has left its mark on the industry but the last decade has witnessed a growing interest in cultural tourism. It has emerged in Egypt, the proud owner of one third of the world monuments, along with the discovery of ancient monuments and the deciphering of hieroglyphics, and continues to our present day.

The Workshop discusses the appearance of a new orientation in cultural tourism, known as backstage tourism, which is concerned with more human aspects of culture: traditions, costumes, ways of life and general attitudes. It will shed light on its significance to Egypt and Alexandria in particular, so as to discover the means through which backstage tourism could be made more popular and useful, for instance, via conferences, festivals, religious ceremonies and folklore. The Workshop will pay heed to all the suggestions made from participants and tourism companies.
