The BA Launches an Initiative to Culturally Empower the Blind

Alexandria— In cooperation with Egypt Future Association (EFA), the BA Taha Hussein Library for the Blind and Visually Impaired, is organizing an initiative to empower the blind. The initiative calls upon writers and publishing houses to waive copyrights from books published in Braille form, or converted into audio form.
Dr. Sohair Wastawy, Head of BA Library Sector, said that the Initiative arose when statistics showed that Egypt is home to more than 700,000 blind people, and that every five seconds, one person loses his/her sight around the world. Being left out of the world of culture and creativity further isolates the blind from society.
A number of organizations, NGOs, media representatives and human rights activists, will meet in the BA Auditorium on Wednesday 4 March 2009, at 4:00 pm to launch the Initiative.
