Proceedings of the Second Day of the Arab Reform Conference

Alexandria—The second day of the Arab Reform Conference, held at the BA from 1 to 3 March 2009 under the title “The Arab World: Present and Future”, witnessed a session entitled “The Influence of the Global Financial Crisis on the Arab World”, under the theme “A Changing Arab World in a Changing Planet”. The Session was chaired by Dr. Abdel Aziz Hegazy, the former Prime Minister of Egypt, and speakers were Hassan Amer, the Egyptian Economic expert; Dr. Feissal Hamad Menawer, Professor of Economics and Political Science in Kuwait University; and Dr. Boshra Saad El-Helaly, Professor at the Omar El-Mokhtar University in Libya.
The theme “Culture and Media in the Arab World” was discussed in a session entitled “The Religious Discourse and the Challenges of the Age”, chaired by Dr. Abdel Moaty Baioumy, with Dr. Amenna Nosseir; Pope Yohanna Kalta from Egypt; and Razek Seriany from Syria as speakers. This theme was also addressed in another session, “Media: A Double-Edged Weapon”, chaired by Lebanese Writer and Journalist Jihad El-Khazen, with speakers Saeed El-Alawy from Morocco; Mohamed Shoman from Egypt; and Mohy Eldin El-Lazikany from Syria.
Under the theme “The Citizen, the State and Society” a session was held entitled “The Status of Arab Women in the Arab Societies”, chaired by Tahany El-Gebaly, Deputy Head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, with the participation of Fahmeya Sharaf Eldin a Lebanese expert in women issues; Dr. Moaza El-Malky, Ambassador of the World Union for Peace; and Hassiba Shneif, member of the Executive Office of Women’s Issues in Sanaa University.
The Arab Reform Conference will come to a close on 3 March 2009, including parallel sessions, the handing out of Dr. Adel Abou Zahra’s Prize, and the Closing Session.
