Opening of the Fifth Global YES Summit in Sweden

The Opening Session of the Fifth Global Youth Entrepreneurship Sustainability (YES) Summit took place on Wednesday, 2 June 2010 entitled “Rework the World” in Leksand, Sweden. YES 2010 is organized by Tällberg Foundation in cooperation with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, and the partenership of the BA.
The Summit is held from 2 to 5 June 2010 and will discuss 150 projects in five themes: people, cities, energy, water and earth.
In his opening speech, Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, stated that development resembles a tree, and people are at the roots of development, however, all development endeavors are now focused on the branches. He stressed on the importance of empowering youth to innovate and rebuild communities. Serageldin also referred to development as a long ongoing process, thus people should not look for instant results. He mentioned that the world spends on weapons 16 times more than development.
It is worth mentioning that the Fifth Global YES Summit is a joint initiative of YES Inc, which is an international network, launched from the BA in 2002, to include more than 55 developing countries targeting youth, entrepreneurship and sustainability and the Tällberg Foundation, which for 30 years has gathered top leaders in discussions of more effective solutions to global challenges.
The final YES Summit will be held at the BA in 2012.
