Coptic Studies Conference at the BA

The BA Calligraphy Center organizes a conference entitled “Life in Egypt during the Coptic Period: Towns and Villages, Laymen and Clergy, Bishops and Dioceses” in cooperation with the Supreme Council for Antiquities and the Society for Coptic Archaeology from 21 and 23 September 2010.
The Conference tackles various themes, namely: History and Archeology in Egypt in the Byzantine Period; History and Archeology in the Coptic Period; Minor Arts in Coptic Egypt; Coptic Language, Restoration (wood, metal work, textile, etc); Coptic Icons and Murals; Touristic Sites Development; Environment and Architecture; and Comparative Studies between the Pharaonic and Coptic Eras.
More than 120 researchers representing 13 countries will participate in the Conference. Dr. Peter Grossmann, Professor of Coptic Studies and Chair of the German Institute for Antiquities will give a presentation on “New Discoveries in the Town of Antinopolis”, Dr. Abdel Halim Nureldine, Former Chairman of the Supreme Council for Antiquities, will explore Coptic Language with a research paper entitled “Coptic as a Stage in the Development of Ancient Egyptian Language”. Loaay Mahmoud Said , General Coordinator of the Conference will participate with a paper entitled “The Use of the Cross within Muslim Tribes in the Egyptian-Libyan Desert”, and Mr. Ahmed Mansour, Head of the BA Ancient Egyptian Language Unit will lecture about “Coptic Typography in Egypt: Origin and Development (1860–1883 CE)”.
