A Digital Rosetta

Prof. Tarcisio Dellasenta, President of the Universal Networking Digital Language (UNDL) Foundation, Geneva -- an institution committed to developing and promoting a multilingual communication -- visited the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on 1 July 2004 and signed a cooperation agreement between his institution and the BA.

“It is a technology that will enable us to arrive at more accurate computer search results in less time,” he said. During his visit, Dellasenta spoke to the Library’s IT staff about the impact of UNDL on the exchange of national languages, cultural norms and social connotations throughout the world. “The future is starting now and will take a lot of work to complete. UNDL is a technology with an impact on everything else. But the situation now is similar to that when telephones were first introduced. Then, everything depended on wires, now telephones are wireless,” he said.

When asked about the role he expected the Alexandria Library to play in promoting UNDL, Dellasenta said that the Bibliotheca Alexandrina was located at the crossroads of civilizations and that in the future the library should be able to play the role of a digital Rosetta.
