Arabic Culture in the Highlight at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The Manuscripts Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is currently hosting the 8th International Colloquium for the History of Science: "Untrodden Areas in the History of Arabic Science," 28-30 September 2004. The colloquium is jointly organized by the BA and the Institute for the History of Arabic Science (Aleppo University, Syria).
In his opening speech, Dr. Mohamed Nezar Okeil, President of Aleppo University, commended the cooperation between the BA and the Syrian university as two major Arab cultural institutions. On the other hand, Dr. Youssef Zeidan, Director of the Manuscripts Center at the BA, stressed the importance of founding a structure of cooperation among specialized researchers in fields of Arab heritage, from all around the world. Zeidan also pointed out the vital role of cross- cultural dialogue to establish a deep awareness of the past to support any efforts for the future.
The conference hosted world specialists and researchers in the history of Arabic science and its impact on the development of human knowledge. It aimed at throwing the light on the un-trodden areas in the history of Arabic science with a thematic focus on: unpublished Arabic scientific manuscripts, unknown Arab scientists, the Arabic scientific output in Egypt and Al-Sham, as well as the history of medical and pharmacological sciences, the history of basic and applied sciences, and the history of urbanization and architecture.
