Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, gave a keynote speech entitled “Rebirth and Revolution: The Story of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina” on 18 April 2013 within an international conference entitled “A New Paradigm for Globalized Knowledge and Library Development” at the National Central Library (NCL) in Taipei, Taiwan celebrating its 80th anniversary.

Serageldin spoke of the challenge of recapturing the spirit of the ancient library in the context of the 21st century, and the new challenges in the face of the present revolutionary turmoil in Egypt.

A set of commemorative stamps was issued for the occasion of the NCL 80th anniversary. Three sections of the fifteen-part stamp are dedicated to Serageldin and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. One part shows a photo of Serageldin lecturing, the second shows the magnificent reading hall of the BA, and the third is an external view of the BA landmark building.
