A Lecture on the Ancient Egyptian Language

Alexandria, 25 January 2005—The Calligraphy Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is organizing a lecture on the Ancient Egyptian Language.

Professor Abdel Halim Nureldin, Dean, Faculty of Archeology, El-Fayoum’s Branch of Cairo University; former Chairman of the Egyptian Monuments Department, Faculty of Archeology, Cairo University; and Director of the Center for the Study of Writing and Calligraphy at BA, will be presenting the lecture focusing on the history of the ancient Egyptian language with samples of the Hieroglyphic, Hieratic, Demotic and Coptic scripts.

He will also present the phonetics of the Ancient Egyptian language, and how the language changed with time. In addition, he will shed light on the story of the Rosetta Stone (Rashid Stone) and the decryption of its symbols in 1822.

The lecture begins at 12:00 noon, and is open to the public.
