Alexandria, 31 January 2005—In cooperation with the National NGOs Center for Population and Development (NCPD) and the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Trust Fund, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is organizing an Information Literacy Workshop for Information Officers in Rural and Sub-urban Regions from 30 January to 2 February 2005.

The trained information officers will be responsible for managing Community Development Centers in these sub-developed regions.

The first part of the BA training workshop will include a session on information literacy through lectures and hands-on activities. Over the two day session, librarians from the BA will teach the trainees basic and advanced information skills, including analysis of informational needs, effective search strategies for retrieving and evaluating information, online searching and browsing, and accurate recognition of authoritative sources. The trainees will be introduced to the Arab and international development gateways, providing them with many useful websites in development-related fields such as health, agriculture, small industry, gender and the environment.

The ICT Trust Fund will pilot the second part of the workshop through lectures, hands-on activities and simulated sessions. Trainees will learn how to manage the Community Development Centers, deal with various users and their unique information needs, handle difficult situations, and develop different policies and social marketing strategies for the ICT. All the while, trainees will be asked to keep within the objective of solving unemployment and development concerns.
