Competition for Developing Alexandria

Alexandria, 6 February 2005—The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), in collaboration with the Alexandria Governorate and the Alexandria Development Center, is organizing a competition to help the city of Alexandria regain its status as one of the most important historical and contemporary Mediterranean cities. The prize amounts to 85,000 Egyptian Pounds, and the results will be announced mid-February 2005.
The competition aims to promote the participation of youth and experts, specialized in architecture and urban planning and development; as well as architecture students in Egyptian universities, in developing a new feasible vision of Alexandria.
Proposals required that projects further urban development of the area surrounding BA, the East Harbor, the Qaitbay Citadel and its surrounding area. Requirements also included suggestions of activities that would encourage economic development and protection of the environment.
