Alexandria, 27 February 2005—Along the margin of the MedCities event, the Alex-Med Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is holding an exhibition till 3 March 2005. The exhibition will display the winning projects of the competition for young architects regarding the re-planning of the Eastern Harbor, its waterfront and the area around the Library of Alexandria. The competition was organized by BA, in collaboration with the Alexandria Governorate and the Alexandria Development Center.
The winning projects were selected upon evaluation by a review committee that was chaired by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and included Dr. Seif Allah Abu Al Naga, President of the Society of Egyptian Architects; Dr. Yehia El Zeiny, Head of Architecture Committee, Supreme Council of Culture; Dr. Mohsen Abu Bakr, Head of the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts, Alexandria University; Dr. Abbas Yehia, Head of the Architectural Engineering and Environmental Design Department, Arab Academy for Science and Technology; and Dr. Mohamed Mamdouh Abdel Kerim, representing architects of the Syndicate of Egyptian Engineers.
Evaluation was not necessarily based on feasibility of the project, as much as on creativity, inspiration and freeing the imagination. It aimed to promote the participation of youth in envisioning a future vision of Alexandria.
Projects submitted ranged from the building of underwater museums, to the rebuilding of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, to a complete modification of the area.
Dr. Serageldin asserted that BA is committed to helping Alexandria regain its status in history as a center of intellect and cultural diversity. He also added that achieving the development of the city of Alexandria requires the combining of three main factors; increasing cultural activities, the discovery of sunken artifacts, and increased investment. He focused mainly on development of the East Harbor and Qaitbay Citadel and called for a 20-year development plan.
Dr. Mohamed Awad, Director of Alex-Med Center, announced that the sum of the competition prizes amounted to 85,000 Egyptian Pounds that were distributed among three projects. In addition, five projects received merit awards. He added that the projects were selected on the basis of how they reflect a new vision of Alexandria stressing on the dialogue among cultures and between Alexandria and the world, while preserving the historical architecture that already exists in the city.
