Celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Shadi Abdel Salam at BA

Alexandria, 28 February 2005—In celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Shadi Abdel Salam (born 1930), the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is inaugurating the first exhibition in Egypt dedicated to the filmmaker, on 24 March 2005. Arrangements for the exhibition started in 2002 at BA. The exhibition includes many of the artist’s design sketches and paintings as well as some of his personal belongings, including his library and furniture pieces.
Along the margin of the celebration there will be many cultural activities including lectures, films, as well as the inauguration of a new show room that will show Shadi Abdel Salam’s films.
To honor his outstanding accomplishments, and his role towards developing Egyptian cinema, the Library of Alexandria has dedicated a permanent exhibition to the personal literary, cinematic works and paintings of the Egyptian director. His film, The Night of Counting the Years (Al-Mumia), received international acclaim. In 1970, it was screened at the Venice International Film Festival; and during that same year, it was awarded the George Sadel Prize in Paris.
