Lecture: The Papyrus in Ancient Egypt

Alexandria, 8 March 2005—A lecture entitled The Papyrus in Ancient Egypt, is organized by the Center for the Study of Writing and Calligraphy at Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), on 9 March 2005. The lecture will be presented by Professor Abdelhalim Nureldin, Director of the Center; Dean, Faculty of Archeology, El-Fayoum"s Branch of Cairo University; former Chairman of the Egyptian Monuments Department, Faculty of Archeology, Cairo University.
In his lecture, Prof. Nureldin will shed light on the papyrus and its significance in the ancient Egyptian civilization and how it represents a turning point from writing on stone to writing on paper. His lecture will include briefs on the name of papyrus in Hieroglyphic, Greek and Arabic languages; the origin and manufacture of papyrus in Egypt; and the other uses of papyrus. In addition, there will be a presentation of the papyrus scrolls displayed in Egyptian and international museums, and the various scripts written on papyrus.
The lecture will begin at 12:00 noon in the BA Auditorium.
