Alexandria, 28 March 2005—Within the international youth movement and global response to meeting the challenges of youth unemployment, an international partnership was announced between the Youth Employment Summit (YES) Campaign and the Youth Employment Network (YEN) initiatives. The YES Campaign, launched at the Alexandria Summit (September 2002) at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina by 1600 delegates from 120 countries, is a civil society movement for youth employment. YEN is a partnership launched by the UN Secretary General that aims to tackle the issue of youth employment at the global, national and local level.

Egypt was chosen, among eleven lead countries, to voluntarily take the initiative to showcase the development of National Action Plans with the support of the YEN. YEN and YES will work together to strengthen the substantive participation of young people in the development and implementation of National Action Plans in these countries through the in-country cooperation of their affiliates and partners. The collaboration of these two initiatives is significant in that it brings the work of both government and civil society closer whilst keeping the focus on youth.

Abdallah Sobeih, YES Regional Coordinator in Middle East, North Africa and Francophone Regions, announced that Egypt was among the first countries to be selected as a member, where the Bibliotheca Alexandrina was the focal point that launched the campaign for the Summit in 2002, adding that Egypt will also be the last country to host the Summit in 2012.
