Alexandria, 30 March 2005—Within the context of the cultural services offered by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) to its visitors, a new training program on how to use computer programs available at BA has been organized for the visually-impaired children and young people, in collaboration with Al Nour Girls’ School for the Blind in Alexandria. The program aims to enable them to cope with the technological and knowledge revolution, and to play a more effective role in society.
Dr. Sohair Wastawy, Chief Librarian at BA, announced that BA has initiated this program to emphasize and promote the contribution of the visually-impaired to their societies through the expansion of intellect. She added that through the Taha Hussein (TH) Library, a specialized library at BA, participants are able to peruse books, periodicals and websites.
The first phase of the program, pointed out Mr. Osama Zakaria, Head of TH Library, aims to familiarize participants with the Braille keyboard. It will then guide them on how to use the software available in the library that converts text into audio, and finally, it will teach them how to surf the Internet.
