The Conference on Ethics in International Economic Relations

Alexandria, 18 April 2005—The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), in collaboration with the Center Rene-Jean Dupuy for Law and Development and the Research Center of Market Law and International Investment (CREDIMI), is organizing a conference entitled Ethics in International Economic Relations, 28 April 2005. The conference discusses several economic issues within three panels: Ethics and Projects; Trends of International Trade and its Ethics; and Various Remedies.
Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, announced that the BA is organizing this conference within the scope of its goals to disseminate cultures and sponsor scientific research that serves humankind. He also stressed on the vital role that the Center Rene-Jean Dupuy for Law and Development plays in utilizing the law to bring about the development of countries. He added that the conference will discuss law and ethics in international economic relations, and shed light on the strong link between applying law to international economic relations and the ethical regulations that have to be followed throughout these relations whether on the international level, between governments or international companies. The conference also explores the local, regional, and international activities that oppose ethical principles, such as abuse of women and children, slave trade, illegal drug smuggling, and money laundry.
The conference brings together economists and legal representatives including Ahmed El-Kosheri, Vice President of Center Rene-Jean Dupuy; Gerard Farjat, Emeritus Professor, Nice University; Said El-Dakkak, Vice President, Alexandria University; Pierre Lalive, Honorary Professor, Faculty of Law in Geneva; and Walid Abdelgawad, Lecturer at Bourgogne University.
The Center Rene-Jean Dupuy for Law and Development is a research unit at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, specialized in law and development. The center is named after the late Professor Rene-Jean Dupuy, who worked as a General-Secretary in the Hague Academy of International Law, then as a professor in Collège de France. HE Professor Boutros Boutros Ghali is the President of the Center.
