the Academy of Science for the Developing World (TWAS-ARO) was launched at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), 2-3 June 2005, under the theme of “Visions and Expectations”.
The opening session featured Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, who gave the introductory speech, "Challenges and Opportunities", and Dr. Mohamed Hassan, Executive Director of TWAS, Italy, who delivered a welcoming note.
Over the course of two days, four sessions were held exploring the visions and expectations of the TWAS-ARO, in addition to a number of lectures, meetings and presentations that were held by a group of scientists and professors.
The meetings discussed the history of science and technology in medicine, biotechnology research in Egyptian institutions, as well as basic science and development of the Arab world and a vision of the role of TWAS-ARO and Arab institutions in sustaining the future.
Based upon the meetings, several recommendations and proposals arose, among which are the promotion of public awareness and appreciation of science; the creation of networks of excellence within the region and with Arab scientists abroad; the support of the new generation of scientists and linking between young scientists and older generations; the propagation of excellence and ethics in science, and last but not least, the proclamation of an Arab Nobel Laureate working in the region, within the next ten years.
The concluding session featured a presentation "Cosmic Acceleration", by Professor Edward Witten, Professor of Physics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton University, that was held at the Middle Hall, BA Conference Center.
