The Reading for All campaign’s fifteenth anniversary at the BA

Alexandria, 18 July 2005—Sunday, 17 July 2005 witnessed the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Reading for All campaign. The festival was attended by H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, Chair of the Higher Committee of the Reading for All campaign and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Library of Alexandria.

“From the Arab El-Mohamadi Library to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina: 15 years of enlightenment” was the title of the festival, named after the Arab El-Mohamadi district where the campaign was launched in 1990. There, a marathon of torch relay by Egyptian youth began across Egypt’s governorates until it ended at the Library of Alexandria.

In the ceremony, Mrs. Mubarak delivered a speech where she affirmed the importance of investing in the intellectual and knowledge capacities of Egyptian youth, as it is the key to their development and progress in society. It was preceded by an introductory note by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. A cultural entertainment program followed and was performed by the adult choir, children’s choir and music artists and groups affiliated to the Culture Palaces Authority.

Other attendees included Mr. Muhammad Safwat El Sherif, Speaker of the Shura Council; Mr. Farouk Hosni, Minister of Culture; Mr. Anas Al Faki, Minister of Information; Dr. Muhammed Al Beltagi, Minister of Youth; Dr. Abdel Rehim Shehata, Minister of State for Local Development; Mr. Abdel Azim Wazir, Governor of Cairo; Mr. Abdel Salam El-Mahgoub, Governor of Alexandria; Mrs. Fayza Abul Naga, Minister of International Cooperation; and Dr. Tarek Kamel, Minister of Telecommunication and Information.
