BA reaffirms that it has never blocked any Human Rights site

Alexandria, 9 October 2005—It is unfortunate that irresponsible and false accusations posted on the web continue to circulate even after they have been completely refuted. One such case is the absolutely false allegation that the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) blocks human rights sites. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” said Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, who not only ensures that all human rights material is easily accessible to all, he refers to sites such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International as “important reference sources for our patrons”.

It is disappointing that someone who claims to work for human rights was at the origin of this utter falsity. Those who were present during the alleged event, have denied the accusation, stating that they had never had any difficulty accessing human rights websites on the BA computers. Statements by Ismail Serageldin and the persons involved have been sent to the IFLA/FAIFE:
