The BA at the World Youth Congress

Alexandria, 26 October 2005—The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) participated in the 3rd World Youth Congress in Scotland, which brought together 600 of the world’s most dynamic young activists in the field of sustainable development, from 120 different countries. The ten youth members who represented the Center, are participants in the educational training program, Modern Trends in Developing Education and Environmental Sustainability, which is held at the BA.
The Congress tackled a number of issues to promote youth involvement and efforts in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). During the Congress, youth were called upon to seek out active partnership with adult mentors who have relevant experience; undertake adequate research so that planned projects are relevant, appropriate and sustainable for the community; create their own training program to ensure the viability and sustainability of their projects; and make greater efforts within and between youth organizations to engender a strong collaborative institution culture. They were also called upon to raise awareness of the MDGs and wider development issues among their peers on the local level; as well as encourage and recruit active volunteers among their peers to complete low cost community development projects.
The CSSP youth training program aims to promote youth’s self-education, touching upon modern trends of learning such as distance-learning and E-learning. One of its goals is also to raise youth awareness with regards to their environment, its problems, and the means of solving such challenges.
