Lecture: Science and Scientists in the Twentieth Century

Alexandria, 15 November 2005—The Planetarium Science Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina organized a lecture by the Nobel Laureate Professor Walter Kohn, entitled “Science and Scientists in the Twentieth Century”, on 15 November 2005. The lecture sheds light on what can science and scientists contribute to help channel the wonderful new opportunities in a positive, humane direction.
Dr. Walter Kohn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry on October 13, 1998 for his development of the density-functional theory. Walter Kohn is a condensed matter theorist who has made seminal contributions to the understanding of the electronic structure of materials. He played the leading role in the development of the density functional theory, which has revolutionized scientists" approach to the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solid materials in physics, chemistry and materials science.
This lecture comes within events of celebrating the World Year of Physics 2005. These events aim to bring the excitement of physics to the public and to inspire a new generation of scientists. They also aim to celebrate Einstein, his great ideas, his influence, and how he changed our view of ourselves, our world and the universe at large.
