Toward a Framework for Digitizing Arabic Heritage

Alexandria, 28 November 2005—A round-table discussion for Digitizing Arabic Heritage, organized by the Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT), in collaboration with Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and UNESCO, is taking place 27-28 November at the CULTNAT premises. The round-table discussion aims to share ideas and technical know-hows, and build a successful information society capable of preserving Arabic heritage through digitization.

The discussion brings together heritage and ICT professionals in the Arab region; representatives of foundations and business sponsors committed to heritage conservation; civil society and non-governmental organizations; decision makers and officials from Arab governments; media representatives; as well as academics and others interested in ICT and heritage conservation.

The discussion revolves around issues pertaining to the efforts being made to digitize and document the memory of the Arab World with its diverse manifestations, either tangible or intangible; digitizing Arab heritage within the context of ICT and sustainable development relying on ICT; and defining priorities for Arab World Heritage issues.
