An exhibition celebrating the bicentenary of HCA

Alexandria, 19 December 2005—Within the bicentenary celebration of Hans Christian Andersen (HCA), the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is hosting an exhibition to honor the Great Danish Writer (1805–1875), in collaboration with the Thorvaldsen’s Museum, Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Association, UNESCO and the Ministry of Education in Denmark. The exhibition is displaying a selected assortment of Andersen’s diaries exploring the main events of his life.
The exhibition Writing is an Act of Love traces the process of how Hans Christian Andersen struggled to learn to read and write. Andersen"s diaries are at the core of the exhibition, offering a vast insight into Andersen"s authorship and his understanding of the world. The Hans Christian Andersen exhibits will remain on display until the end of January 2006.
The exhibition inauguration was attended by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Mr. Stig Miss, Director of Thorvaldsens Museum, Copenhagen, Mr. Simon Stansfield Bast, Director LEGO, as well as HRH Prince Joachim of Denmark.
The inauguration also witnessed the unveiling of the Hans Christian Andersen Bust which was donated to the Library by Denmark.
