Egyptian Youth Discussions on Scientific Thinking and Knowledge at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA)

Alexandria, 19 January 2006—The BA is organizing an assembly to promote Culture and Scientific Thinking, in cooperation with the Executive Council of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, on January 25th. The assembly will gather more than 200 youth from different Egyptian governorates, where these youth, themselves will organize and moderate sessions. The assembly will discuss the role of the Executive Council of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology and the BA in disseminating knowledge and culture. The issue of developing e-libraries will also be tackled during these sessions. In addition, a session will be dedicated to promote the scientific approach as a basis for both personal and professional dealings.
As part of the gathering, youth will conduct interviews with various intellectuals including, Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria; Dr. Mostafa Tolba, Former Director of the United Nations Environment Program; Dr. Mohsen Shoukry, Deputy Director, Academy of Scientific Research and Technology; Dr. Nabih Al-Alkamy, Chairman, Youth Committee, Academy of Scientific Research and Technology; Dr. Nabil Aly, Director, Multi Languages Advanced Systems Company.
Dr. Salah Soliman, Advisor to Director of the Library and coordinator of the assembly, stated that youth will discuss the concept of culture and scientific thinking and will present their views with regards to obstacles in adopting scientific thinking in decision making and evaluation of performance. Dr. Soliman added that the gathering is part of youth oriented programs held by Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) at the BA, where specialized staff urge youth to raise questions and conduct objective studies to find answers in a creative manner that promotes free dialogue and fruitful competition.
