Athens Roundtable of Business community Against the Trafficking of Human Beings
Posted on
Alexandria 26 January 2006—The Suzanne Mubarak Women"s International Peace Movement and the Global Coalition of Women Defending Peace organized a roundtable on "Business Community against the Trafficking of Human Beings" to signal the beginning of an international campaign against the scourge of human trafficking. The Roundtable is under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece and is co-sponsored by the World Bank, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), the United Nations Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the "Foundation for the Child and the Family".
This round table is a follow-up by the Global Coalition, which was established during the International Conference on Women Defending Peace, 2004 co-sponsored by the Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland. Trafficking, particularly of women and children, was identified as a priority area demanding urgent and sustained action. Much work has been undertaken by some governments and the international community. One area requiring urgent attention was the involvement and the support of the business community for global action. Whenever private and public sectors worked in partnerships on specific issues, consolidated action has invariably followed giving a better chance for successful outcomes.
