This lecture is organized by the BA Antiquities Museum and it will be delivered by Mohamed Abdelhamid Ismail, Head of the Alexandria Antiquities Department. The lecture will discuss the City of Victory (Nicopolis), the region which Strabon described, stating: “After passing through the Hippodromos is the Nicopolis, which contains buildings fronting the sea not less numerous than a city. It is 30 stadia distant from Alexandreia. Augustus Cæsar distinguished this place, because it was here that he defeated Antony and his party of adherents.”
Numerous historians, starting with El-Falaki, Von Sieglin, Botti and ending with Kebret, Nirostrauss and Breccia, attempted to map the city of Alexandria in order to identify and outline the borders of the city of Nicopolis. Through examination and comparisons, the borders of the region, which later on became an integral part of the city of Alexandria, began to materialize through digging and excavation work done in the city in recent years. Thus, the details and imagining of this district became much clearer.
