Possible Alternatives for the Improvement of Medical Insurance in Egypt

Alexandria — the Dialogue Forum Center is organizing on Saturday, 22 July 2006 a seminar on Means of Reforming Medical Insurance in Egypt. Prof. Dr. Samir Banoob, an International Consultant in Health Systems and Professor of Health Policy and Management, and Prof. Dr. Madiha Khatab, Dean of Faculty of Medicine at Qasr al Aini will participate in the seminar.
Egypt launched the medical insurance system in 1963 covering around 140 thousands individuals as an ideal solution to provide acceptable medical care to the citizens. Nowadays, there is a huge shortage in the medical insurance system covering only 52% of the population. It is worth mentioning that during the past years the government succeeded in expanding the scope of medical insurance to cover additional groups including school students and children, and at the same time medical care burdens increased on the general budget. The total expenditures of the medical insurance services through the last fiscal year is around 1.6 billion Egyptian pounds. In this context, the medical insurance system in Egypt needs a comprehensive reform.
