Conference: The Influence of Cultures on the Arab Child

Alexandria, 22 September 2005—In cooperation with the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is hosting a conference on the Influence of Cultures on the Arab Child, 25-27 September, which takes place within the framework of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). It will highlight the cultural rights of children, and the need to respect religious, cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
The conference aims to discuss different cultural influences affecting the Arab child, and the challenges faced by these influences. It also seeks to promote cultural development of the Arab child.
With more than 200 researchers and experts participating, discussions will revolve around three main themes: the Arab Child’s Sources of Culture; the Arab Child’s Language in the Era of Globalization; and the Effect of Local and Foreign Media on the Arab child.
In addition, a session will be held illustrating several international experiences concerning children’s culture; such as the effect of globalization on the American child, the effect of modern and traditional media on the European child, and the impact of foreign children’s books on the Arab child, especially the Palestinian child.
A number of workshops for children and adults are also organized within the framework of the conference, to demonstrate the importance of children discussing their problems and defining their goals and dreams.
