American Cinema Week at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Alexandria, 18 January 2006— As part of the BA Arts Center monthly program, the center is holding a cinema week, entitled American Cinema- Stanley Kubrick: A Director From USA, presenting a collection of Kubrick’s famous works including, Lolita, a novel by Vladimir Nabokov in 1955. The novel, the relationship between a middle-aged man and a 14-year old girl, was rejected by four American publishers. However, the novel was published by the French Olympia Press and considered, by Graham Greene, one of the best ten novels published in 1955. On the other hand, Dr. Strangelove refers to the cold war between the Soviets and Americans and the threats of a nuclear war that would demolish the entire world. Film 2001:A Space Odyssey is also presented as one of the most famous scientific fiction movies. Barry Lyndon by William Thackery is among the best literary works in the Victorian Age. The film features the racy memoirs of an Irish braggart and rogue. The Arts Center program also includes The Shinning, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut, which Kubrick finished a few days before his death in 1999.
The program will feature an exhibition presenting photos and documents of Stanley Kubrick. The Arts Center published a book on Stanley Kubrick tackling both his personal and professional life with details of his works, staff, and a brief on his films.
